ESL One Hamburg started off with the top teams stomping their match-up: Newbee destroying Fnatic, Team Liquid schooling SG e-sports, Virtus.Pro rolling over Keen, and Team Secret mowing down Evil Geniuses. Four BO1 matches opened the first Dota 2 Major, and as a result, four out of the eight teams are already facing elimination for Day 2.
The event kicked off with Newbee facing Fnatic, the team that replaced the Southeast Qualifier Happy Feet. Though Fnatic drafted an Anti-mage and Venomancer to cover all their bases from minute one, Newbee‘s better team-fighting decisions and ganking rotations made sure that the farm was inexistent for the Anti-mage. Fnatic didn’t stand a chance against the team-fight potential of Newbee, and this led to a one-sided 32-minute victory for the Chinese squad.
Team Secret then met with their storied competitor, Evil Geniuses. Evil Geniuses looked to be pretty good, pushing really hard with their Death Prophet + Clinkz core duo. In fact, their ganking and objective taking was good enough during the early- and mid-game that they were leading 6000 in gold networth and 15-3 in terms of kill score. Team Secret only needed to win the fights around Roshan and win the consecutive skirmishes by landing good initiations from FATA-‘s Magnus to take back the game, and score the victory in 38 minutes.
Team Liquid proceed to school SG e-sports, with Miracle- opting for the Spectre pick. While the pick looked to be not that good and not that meta, Team Liquid still pulled it off by designating Miracle- to a fighting Spectre, around the Beastmaster and the Broodmother. SG e-sports showed signs of life in looking for the Spectre, but there was so much that the Beastmaster and Broodmother was forcing around the map and that fact created a lot of space for Miracle– to work with. Team Liquid easily took the game after 33 minutes of game time.
Perhaps the biggest stomp today, as Virtus.Pro disposed of Keen Gaming in 29 quick minutes with their Bloodseeker and Bounty Hunter pick. Lil started slow with his Bounty Hunter while RAMZES666 wasn’t that great either with his Bloodseeker. However, a clash down bottom lane where Keen overplayed their hand and thought they can teamfight around VP‘s Tier 2 tower. They were heavily punished by the Bloodseeker’s Thirst, and went on to win the succeeding fights. The track gold that they got from Bounty Hunter quickly escalated VP’s snowball, and it was too much for Keen Gaming to handle.
All the losers of today’s matches will be facing elimination come Day 2.
