League of Legends Patch 8.4: The top lane champions
Posted by cmsadminGG February 24, 2018

Because of the length of Patch 8.4 and its vast number of adjustments, we’ve decided to separate it into multiple articles. In this one, we’ll be taking a good look into the top lane adjustments. It gives top laners more variety when it comes to champion choices but it also weakens current mainstays – Gangplank and Ornn.

If you missed out on our article on the Ability power item changes, visit our article here.

COST 40 mana at all ranks ⇒ 60/55/50/45/40 mana

BARRELY VISIBLE Barrels no longer grant vision of other units

DURATION 60 seconds ⇒ 25 seconds

Gangplank has raised up the ranks of being one of the most played champions both professionally and in ranked. His strength and stability in the top lane especially in the hands of an experienced Gangplank just became too potent with a win rate of barely above 50%.

While his damage isn’t touched this patch, the duration to Powder Keg has been lowered and affects the setup of players. Along with this, the free vision from the barrels have been removed, removing a big utility aspect of Powder Keg. The damage to Parrrley has also been increased affecting his early game poke. Albeit, it is usually the first maxed skill, the mana increase will make players more selective of when they use Parrrley.

COOLDOWN REFUND 45/50/55/60% (based on rank of R – GNAR!) ⇒40% at all levels

BASE DAMAGE 20/60/100/140/180 ⇒ 50/85/120/155/190

The adjustment to Gnar this patch is interesting, especially with Riot deciding to increase the damage to Hop while nerfing the cooldown refund of Boomerang Throw in higher levels. Hop isn’t quite the main damage source for good ol’ Gnar. Despite this, the drastically larger damage early in early levels of Hop may just be much more potent. It won’t be reliant due to its cooldown but it may become a go-to tool to get that last hit.

COOLDOWN 13/12/11/10/9 seconds ⇒ 17/15/13/11/9 seconds

DAMAGE 10/12/14/16/18% target’s maximum health ⇒12/13/14/15/16% target’s maximum health

SHIELD DURATION 2.5 seconds ⇒ 3.5 seconds

BRITTLE DURATION 6 seconds ⇒ 3 seconds

BASE DAMAGE 30/50/70/90/110 ⇒ 80/125/170/215/260

DAMAGE RATIO 30% bonus armor + 30% bonus magic resist ⇒ 40% bonus armor + 40% bonus magic resist

SHOCKWAVE DAMAGENo longer deals an additional 50/90/130/170/210 (+30% bonus armor) (+30% bonus magic resist) when colliding with terrain

OVERALL DAMAGE 80/140/200/260/320 ⇒ 80/125/170/215/260

OVERALL DAMAGE RATIO 60% bonus armor + 60% bonus magic resist ⇒40% bonus armor + 40% bonus magic resist

Ornn has been quite tough having gone through a roller coaster of nerfs, buffs, and everything in between. But this time around he gets hit hard. Perhaps the biggest nerf to Searing Charge is the removal of the additional damage when colliding with terrain. They have adjusted the base damage of Searing Charge, it still won’t hit as hard as he used to. Along with this, the duration to the Brittle debuff has been lowered by half adding up to even less damage.

These changes may be what takes the Fire Below the Mountain out of the top lane until further notice.

COOLDOWN 9/8/7/6/5 seconds ⇒ 7/6.5/6/5.5/5 seconds

RATIO 140% total attack damage at all ranks ⇒ 140/145/150/155/160% total attack damage

BUGFIX Fixed a bug where Crippling Strike sometimes failed to damage certain units (ex. Yorick’s W – Dark Procession)

ARMOR PENETRATION 5/10/15/20/25% armor penetration ⇒10/15/20/25/30% armor penetration

Darius was once a dominant force in the top lane but because of changes in the meta along with some adjustments. The changes to him this patch may entice players to get their hands on the Hand of Noxus again. The lowered cooldown early in Crippling Strike and scaling ratio paired with the increased armor penetration to Apprehend will just offer an overall harder hitter.

DAMAGE 10-180 (at levels 1-18) ⇒ 20-180 (at levels 1-18)

DAMAGE55/75/95/115/135 ⇒ 60/80/100/120/140 (doubled on slam)

The changes to Poppy are quite interesting with a slightly stronger Iron Ambassador earlier in the game partnered with a slight slonger Heroic Charge across the board. Because most players tend to max out her Hammer Shock first, it may not affect her overall playtime. It does offer players good counters against highly mobile top laners like Camille or maybe even a Jax.

DAMAGE 65/95/125/155/185 ⇒ 65/100/135/170/205

EMPOWERED DAMAGE 95/140/185/230/275 ⇒ 100/150/200/250/300

Lastly, Renekton gets a stronger Cull the Meek especially in higher levels. The Gator that just rips through teams when he gets ahead early gets an even stronger laning phase with the drastic increase in damage to both base damage and empowered damage. It may be best to bring out the tanky laners that can survive the stronger early laning phase against Renekton.
