SEA Games 2019 Hearthstone and Dota 2 Esports Event Competitors Face First Hurdle as Games Get Major Updates
Posted by Martin Patino November 30, 2019

The esports events of the 2019 SEA Games are only a few days away and the representatives of each participating country have spent months preparing for the big event. But it looks like the competing Hearthstone and Dota 2 players may have to redo their strategies at the last minute as the former is set to release a major update right on the day the esports events begin while the latter released one just a few days ago.

The Dota 2 Update, Gameplay Update 7.23 or the Outlanders update, has significantly changed many of the games mechanics, items, heroes, and a whole lot more, making it feel like a drastically different game. The significant changes to the game have led many to jokingly refer to it as Dota 3 (or even 4) and with only a few days left before the start of the Dota 2 event at the 2019 SEA Games on December 7, 2019, the participating teams will have very little time to not only figure out the new patch but also work out and test optimal, winning strategies and compositions. With so many changes that have somewhat erased the game’s previous meta, the competitors will be racing against time to prepare themselves for the games.

The Hearthstone update isn’t as expansive but is still as significant due to the serious impact it will have on the game’s current meta. The update will see the re-introduced Wild cards be rotated out of the Standard pool earlier than everyone initially expected. Previously, it was assumed that the Wild cards would be rotated out of Standard when the next expansion, Descent of Dragons, goes live on December 11 (GMT+8). But a recent PC Gamer interview with Hearthstone Principal Game Designer Mike Donais reveals that the cards will actually be rotated out on December 6 (GMT+8) instead, which is the second day as well as the semi-finals of the Hearthstone event at the 2019 SEA Games.

The revelation of the Hearthstone update was shared by Sibol national team member Jia Dee.

These surprising curve balls will undoubtedly be the first big hurdle the 2019 SEA Games esports event competitors will have to face on their journey to grab the gold for their respective countries.
