Lapse: A Forgotten Future is what you get when you cross a collectible card game, the political TV Show, Scandal, and Tinder. In it you play the president of an unnamed nation as you decide on matters of the state by simply swiping left or right.
The gameplay is simple: your presidential advisors, generals, ambassadors and the like will come up to you with issues in the form of playing cards and you simply swipe left or right to decide one way or the other.
As you make your decisions, you have to manage 4 different factors: Environment, People, Military and Money. Your decisions on each political matter will increase or decrease one or more of these factors often by raising or lowering something else.
You want to shutdown that chemical plant throwing sewage in the rivers? It’ll be better for your Environment but your Money will take a hit. You want to enforce a curfew? You’ll keep the People in check but you’re Military will lose a few resources. And so on.
If any of these factors go too high or too low then that means game over for your political plans. And usually that means dying in some gruesome fashion.
With all these factors, Lapse presents politics as a delicate balancing act where political decisions are made while juggling a lot of vested interest. Pretty heady stuff for a “Tinder-em-up”.
Tying everything together is Lapse’s odd-ball, pseudo-sci-fi narrative. You, the President have been sent back in time by a mysterious entity to prevent the apocalypse that will happen in the year 2150. The story is told through the cards that you randomly draw that are currently in your deck.
Along the way, the story makes more than its fair share of twists and turns. Branching paths are formed each time you choose between several crucial decision points in the game. At which point it adds a new set of cards into your deck to join the pile of issues you get to decide on.
The game also measures progress by the days and years that you survive and keep your regime afloat until the game reaches 1 of 3 possible endings that happen once you reach certain dates.
At its core, Lapse: A Forgotten Future is political commentary told in the simplest most approachable way. It presents a logical approximation of what it’s like to make big political decisions and the various considerations that go into them.
Lapse also has a surprising amount of replayability for its simplicity and length. We found ourselves swiping non-stop and losing hours on end just to see what effects our decisions had wrought upon the world.
