We’re finally halfway through 2020, and with the past months’ big announcements on the next generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles, we have a lot to look forward to later on in the year. As we wait for more details on the PS5 and the Xbox Series X, it’s a good time to start working through our current-gen backlogs before we move on to future consoles, so let’s not miss out on the free games being put up for grabs on our console subscription service of choice.
Here are the games you can play for free this July on PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold.
This July marks the 10th anniversary of PS Plus, and in celebration of the subscription service reaching double-digit age, they’re adding an extra game for free: Erica; But before we get to talking about the relatively unknown, interactive thriller, let’s check out the other two triple-A games being made available for free on PS Plus this month.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to the critically acclaimed 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider. It tells the story of Lara Croft one year after the events of the first game, as she struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder and attempts to cope with it by setting out on another adventure with her late father’s research as her only lead. In Rise of the Tomb Raider, we get to see how Lara’s internal and external conflicts eventually shape her into the battle-hardened, legendary Tomb Raider we all know and love. It’s the perfect game to play next if you just finished The Last of Us Part II and you’re looking for another fix of action-adventure gameplay.
If you’ve been following our coverage of the FIBA Esports Open, you might be itching to play some NBA 2K yourself, and it’s likely that you’ve already got a copy of 2K20 or an earlier 2K game. I mean, when you live in the Philippines and you own a PS4, having an NBA 2K game is almost an unspoken law. But let’s say you don’t have 2K20 yet, or you’re like me and you only bought an older 2K game because you needed something to play with your buddies who aren’t really “gamers,” well, here’s the good news for us: NBA 2K20 is now playable for free through PS Plus. It’s got solid single-player modes and more than enough variety in multiplayer to keep you and your dudebro friends entertained. It’s a no-brainer, go get it.
As a celebratory add-on, we’re also getting the interactive thriller Erica for free on PS Plus. Erica is the first game from Peter Molyneux-backed studio, Flavourworks. Founded in 2015, Flavourworks is both a film production and game development company, and their aim is to create games that play out more like choose-your-own-adventure movies. Erica is all about making choices, and you can continue to replay it up until you get every possible outcome. If you liked Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, you’ll love Erica, and it’s a great way to spice up your nightly Netflix binge-watching sessions.
When it comes to July’s free games, I’m pretty sure the winner is PS Plus, as this month’s Xbox Live Gold games are a little underwhelming. Still, a free game’s a free game, and particularly Saints Row 2 is still a great game that you should play if you haven’t yet. Here are the rest of the games set to be playable for free on Xbox Live Gold this month.
(available July 1 to 31 on Xbox One)
(available July 16 to August 15 on Xbox One)

For the latest updates on each month’s free games, as well as the latest news on the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, make sure to stay tuned. In the meantime, check these games out while they’re free!
