2017 League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational Play-In Stage: GIGABYTE Marines secures the last seed for the Group Stage
Posted by cmsadminGG May 07, 2017

The 2017 Mid-Season Invitational Play-In Stage is finally over and in the end it was the GIGABYTE Marines that took the third and final seed in the Group Stage.

The GIGABYTE Marines and SuperMassive faced each other in Round 3 of the Play-In Stage after dropping their series against Team SoloMid and the Flash Wolves, respectively. Prior to which, both teams dominated their groups in Round 1. Despite clearly playing different playstyles on the Rift, only one would continue to the Group Stage.

In Game One, it was the GIGABYTE Marines’ aggression and protect the AD Carry composition that dominated as the GIGABYTE Marines AD Carry, Slay had an early lead on the Jhin with the help of Archie and Levi. The Marines found the right team fights and protected the right people in order to close out the game in 24 minutes.

SuperMassive fought back in Game Two after the 2017 TCL Winter MVP and SuperMassive top laner fabFabulous took matters in his own hands. The familiar Marines early game was in full swing with their jungler, Levi applying as much pressure as he could to the lanes. But these were thwarted multiple times by a visiting or teleporting fabFabulous who looked fabulous on his Rumble. SuperMassive evened out the series in 36 minutes with the Rumble with a massive 11/3/4 KDA.

After the damage of Game Two, the GIGABYTE Marines banned out the Rumble to force fabFabulous on a more utility tank, Shen. This seemed to have work despite a First Blood for Naru, as the GIGABYTE Marines found their momentum with enough crowd control and burst to take down SuperMassive’s composition. In the end, the GIGABYTE Marines found themselves in a 2-1 lead after a 36 minute game.

With their backs against the walls, SuperMassive decided to pick LeBlanc for their mid laner, Naru and a Maokai for fabFabulous after the GIGABYTE Marines pinched the top lane pool almost entirely. The Marines answered with a Lissandra for their mid laner, Optimus and the familiar Gragas for their top laner, Stark. Lissandra hasn’t seen much play in recent times but Optimus’ efficiency with the champion especially against a LeBlanc was impressive as he took an early lead against Naru.

With Naru unable to find his picks on the LeBlanc, the GIGABYTE Marines stormed their way through the game and ended the game in a swift 22 minutes.

With the win, the GIGABYTE Marines not only did they secure their place in the Group Stage, but they’ve also secured a second seed for the Southeast Asian region for the 2017 World Championships.

It will be interesting how they matchup against the other teams in the Group Stage but one thing is certain, they’ve already exceed expectations.
