Avengers: Endgame comes out today! This is the culmination of the events of the unprecedented Marvel Cinematic Universe that’s been more than a decade in the making. That being said before you clamor on to cinemas we have a few questions about the state of the MCU in general going into Endgame for you to chew on and whet your appetite!
Here are 6 Burning Questions We Want Endgame to Answer!
(Warning: Major spoilers for the past movies follow)
Who Is Still Alive?
When we last saw Earth’s Mightiest Heroes at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, they were beaten, defeated and quite frankly, there weren’t many left standing. When Thanos snapped his fingers he used the Infinity Gauntlet and the Infinity Stones to wipe out half of the universe from existence including the following heroes: Winter Soldier, Falcon, Drax, Gamorra, Mantis, Drax, Starlord, Groot, Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, Vision, Scarlet Witch and Black Panther. Additional casualties include, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Hank Pym, The Wasp and Janet Van Dyne.
That being said, the only remaining Avengers that are left to defend the earth are as follows: Iron Man, War Machine, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Thor, Captain America, Rocket, Nebula and Captain Marvel.
As we go into Endgame, who else is out there still alive? Are the Defenders from Netflix’s branch of the MCU still alive? Are the characters from Agents of SHIELD still alive? Who survived Thanos’ attack on the Asgardian Ship? Hopefully we’ll find the answers to all these questions and more in Endgame.
What Is The State Of The Universe?
With the Snappening™™ destroying half of the life in the universe, its sure to have caused an absurd amount of chaos and destruction . When it comes to determining approximately how much, we need answer how did the Gauntlet compute the exact half of everything?
Was it taking the raw population and simply dividing by two? Or did it take into account other factors such as stature, profession or overall importance to existence before deciding to eliminate the individual? If not then, the Gauntlet may have created several disastrous imbalances across the universe. For example, if it wiped out more health personnel such doctors, surgeons and medics than the amount needed to adequately treat the dying and the injured, then death tolls galaxy-wide will exponentially sky rocket adding to the initial decimation. If the Gauntlet decimated more of any planet’s police force than its criminal population then that planet would see rampant crime rates shoot up including looting, rioting and violence
The same goes for crucial Government structures which would through whole planets or systems into anarchy, Scientists, scholars and historians whose knowledge and research are irreplaceable and lost to time causing a plateau of intellect and discovery.
The Snap could have done untold damage and destruction even surpassing the initial casualties, something Thanos might not have forseen.
Will #Thanus Happen?
What was Doctor Strange’s Plan?
When Doctor Strange looked forward in the future to see all possible outcomes of the battle to come, we know he only saw one way in which they would win. We also know this outcome definitely needed Iron Man to survive given that Strange gave Thanos the Time Stone to save Tony Stark’s life despite him saying earlier in the movie that he’d never do such a thing. But apart from that, we don’t know much about the Sorcerer Supreme plans and how to undo the Snap. Was the Time Stone that he gave Thanos fake? Or did he enchant it with a spell or curse before he gave it to Thanos. Did he give Tony something to undo everything?
Can Thanos Even Reverse The Snap?
At the end of Infinity War, after Thanos does the deed, we see the Infinity Gauntlet burnt, mishapen, and looking ruined and spent. This all begs the question: Can Thanos even undo the Snap? I doubt that the events of Infinity War can be simply undone by a fist fight with Thanos but even if the Avengers somehow end up beating up the Mad Titan and force him into changing everything back, do the Gauntlet and the Stones even have the power to do so? And If they do, at what cost?
Who Will Survive?
This leads us to the biggest question on everyone’s minds: Who will survive? It’s highly likely that one, if not all of the remaining Avengers will perish giving their life to restore the Universe or Avenge it. It’s only fitting. So who will it be? Let’s run it down by likelihood.
Captain Marvel is probably the least likely to perish in the coming battle. Her death would be unceremonious and almost meaningless seeing as we’ve only seen a small part of her journey as a hero. I can also envision a future MCU where a much wisened Carol Danvers leads the new crop of heroes and Avengers, enforcing peace towards not only earth but also the Cosmos.
Being the last remaining Asgardian Thor is unlikely to be killed off. He still needs to restore Asgard and guide his entire race back to its former glory. Hopefully, he reunites with Valkyrie, who was confirmed to still be alive.
Rocket and Nebula are similarly pretty safe, If the Guardians of the Galaxy make it back then I imagine that the loss of Gamorra would more than be enough of the team to suffer. Rocket also adds a crucial element to the Guardians dynamic often times being the most capable among them in any situation so it’s unlikely they’ll get rid of him.
Black Widow and Hawkeye are also quite safe. From a storytelling standpoint showing a couple of humans go against an inter-dimensional threat and surviving is more interesting than the alternative. I can also see both or either of characters take up a leadership role in whatever the new crop of Avengers will look like.
With the Hulk, only one thing is certain, he’s not going down with out a rematch from Thanos. After he gets his butt kicked by the Mad Titan he retreats inside Bruce Banner throughout Infinity War and refuses to come out. We’re looking at Endgame for the inevitable salty runback from the Jade Giant.
War Machine might beef it. He really might. The idea has been played around with before in Captain America: Civil War and it might finally come to fruition in Endgame. The only thing holding me back from making this a sure thing is he might have to uphold the Iron-Man mantle for Tony if the latter perishes.
Speaking of which, all signs point to Iron-Man biting the bullet. He’s instrumental in the one positive outcome that Strange foresaw, so much so that he essentially handed victory to Thanos in the form of the time stone to let Tony live. This might be because the time isn’t right for him to lay down his life… yet.
We also know Chris Evans has publicly announced his retirement from the Captain America character. So it’s reasonable to assume that Cap might die in Avengers:Endgame. It would definitely be a noble death, one worthy of a hero such as Steve Rogers. We’d also probably also see him in a fictional montage finally getting that dance with Peggy. Here’s hoping!
And the final question you should ask is Are You Ready? Avengers: Endgame is in theaters right now! We don’t need to tell you to go watch it, #WhateverItTakes!
