Last October 2019, our pals from ASUS Philippines sent us the ASUS ROG Phone II for us to check out. After 3 months of using it as a daily driver, I have to say that it’s more than “gaming smartphone” — it’s THE ideal smartphone.
|• 6.59” AMOLED Display with 120Hz Refresh Rate||• THREE USB-C ports and a 3.5mm jack|
|• Massive 6000mAh battery with Quick Charge 4.0||• Up to 12GB RAM, 1TB Storage|
|• Dual rear camera: 48MP f/1.8 and 13MP, f/2.4 ultra-wide lens||• DTS:X Front-facing Stereo Speakers|
As a skeptic mobile FPS gamer, I’ve always wanted to know how the ROG Phone II would change the experience for me. Playing hours of Call of Duty: Mobile proved to be enjoyable thanks to its AirTrigger II touch sensors. Your thumbs will thank you.
Furthering the mobile gaming experience, the phone also comes with an active cooling unit aptly called the AeroActive Cooler II. Although rarely heats up for me while playing, it comes in handy whenever you find yourself in a really warm place.
While Call of Duty: Mobile is a fun experience on the ROG Phone II, the game’s framerate is capped to 60 frames. For games that do run up to 120 frames, the visual experience is breathtaking. Rhythm games run silky-smooth and give you enough reaction time to hit that last block of note on Superstar JYP.
For non-gaming applications, scrolling through your social media feed and swiping through menus feel more indulging compared to 60Hz mobile displays.
Although ASUS ROG markets the phone towards performance-focused gamers, the ROG Phone II really stands out as an exceptional device with its monstrous 6000mAh battery (which can last the whole day with mid-high screen brightness and 120Hz settings), vibrant loudspeakers, and breathtaking display.
The camera performs well enough to take quality photos although low-light shots leave much to be desired compared to other flagship phones. Video quality is also worth noting with its decent stability and crisp audio recording quality.
The ROG Phone II is an outstanding mobile phone that goes beyond its “gaming” branding. If I could cast a fearless forecast, it’s the kind of phone that I would like to keep after 5 years.
If you don’t mind the more aggressive design and the lack of waterproofing, the ROG Phone II is a great choice for both gamers and non-gamers, if your budget allows it.
