Blizzard announces The Witchwood, Hearthstone’s latest expansion

Blizzard is following up last December’s Kobolds & Catacombs with another expansion for their hit online card game Hearthstone. Named “The Witchwood,” the upcoming expansion will introduce two new card mechanics, the single-player mode Monster Hunt, and 135 new cards.

Watch the trailer for The Witchwood here:

The Witchwood is set in a horror-themed and Worgen-cursed city of Gilneas. The expansion’s single-player mode will follow Gilneas’ bravest heroes on their quest to vanquish the curse that lurks in the heart of the Witchwood.

New Mechanics

Much like other Hearthstone expansions, new card mechanics will be introduced with The Witchwood. The mechanics are namely Echo and Rush. Cards with the Echo mechanic can be played multiple times in a single turn; after playing the card, a ghostly copy of it will appear in a player’s hand which will disappear when not used by the end of the turn.

Cards with Rush meanwhile, can attack enemy minions immediately after being placed in the board. The only exception is that they cannot attack heroes until the next turn.

Monster Hunt

As mentioned earlier, The Witchwood will feature a free single-player game mode named Monster Hunt. Monster Hunt will play much like Dungeon Run in Kobolds & Catacombs; players will face eight encounters, en route to the game-mode’s final boss.

There will also be four new heroes exclusive to Monster Hunt. Each hero has different powers, and each will have different optimum strategies and playstyles.

135 New Cards

For most Hearthstone fans, the most exciting part of every expansion is the set of new cards. The Witchwood won’t disappoint in that regard, as it will introduce 135 new cards upon release. The new cards will be slowly revealed starting this March 26.

New cards are always great, but this does mean that cards introduced in the expansions Whispers of the Old Gods, One Night in Karazhan, and Mean Streets of Gadgetzan will no longer be playable in the game’s Standard play.

The Witchwood card packs are now available for pre-purchase, with the pre-order bundle priced at USD 49.99. The bundle includes 70 card packs (20 more than previous pre-order bundles), as well as an exclusive card back. While the expansions’ release date is yet to be revealed, expect The Witchwood to be available in-game this April.
