Hearthstone’s Forbidden Library Event Lifts the Veil on the Secrets of Scholomance Academy
Posted by Paolo Arciga September 06, 2020

It can only be good news that less than a month into Hearthstone’s latest expansion, Scholomance Academy, we’re already getting some big updates for the game. The Hearthstone player base has probably gotten used to mid-expansion updates and nerfs that come a little later than desired, but since the start of Hearthstone’s Year of the Phoenix, Blizzard’s Team 5 has done a great job of making frequent updates and balance changes more quickly than ever before.

September 8 marks the beginning of the time-limited Forbidden Library event, which will showcase a whole bunch of extra content for the Scholomance Academy expansion for three weeks, up until September 29. Alongside the launch of the Forbidden Library event, Hearthstone’s 18.2 patch update is also set to go live, and it’s got a few interesting changes and additions to both constructed play and Hearthstone Battlegrounds.

If you want to excel at Scholomance Academy, it’s a good idea to do some advanced reading, so let’s take a look at everything that’s coming before the Forbidden Library event goes live.

Kicking off the opening of the Forbidden Library is the 18.2 patch update, which will introduce three of Scholomance’s top professors as Battlegrounds heroes. Lord Barov, Jandice Barov, and Forest Warden Omu have all proven themselves to be some of the most powerful and handy Dual-Class cards to have in the expansion’s constructed meta, and soon we’ll get to see how Scholomance’s best and brightest will fare in the Battlegrounds. Their Battlegrounds Hero Powers are as follows:

  • Jandice Barov – Hero Power: Swap a friendly non-golden minion with a random one in Bob’s Tavern.
  • Forest Warden Omu – Hero Power: (Passive) After you upgrade Bob’s Tavern, gain 2 Gold this turn only.
  • Lord Barov – Hero Power: Guess which player will win their next combat. If they win, get three Coins.

Alongside these three new heroes, Micro Mummy will also be replacing Mecharoo as a new Tavern Tier 1 Mech, which might prove to be a significant buff to early game Mech builds. Pack Leader will also be nerfed to have only 2 attack due to how powerful early and mid-game Beast builds have become ever since the card was moved to Tier 2 from Tier 3.

Hey everyone, get in here!

It’s time to make like a Grim Patron and invite your friends to Bob’s Tavern, because we’re finally getting one of the most requested features in Hearthstone Battlegrounds: multiplayer lobbies. You can queue into a ranked match with up to three friends, and any lobbies with 5 to 8 players will be placed in private games, in order to avoid Ranked mode win-trading. If you’ve got a lot of friends who play Hearthstone Battlegrounds, private lobbies would be perfect for practicing some of the game’s trickier heroes like Lich Baz’hial and Dancin’ Deryl without risking losing your precious MMR points.

The Hearthstone Book of Heroes has been opened

On September 15, we’ll be getting some new single-player content with the first installment in the Hearthstone Book of Heroes. While it’s yet unclear as to whether this will serve as the Scholomance Academy expansion’s Solo Adventure or if it’ll be a new single-player game mode of its own, I assume that it’ll be the latter.

The Hearthstone Book of Heroes is a 10-installment series which will tell the stories of the game’s 10 core heroes, with each installment set to play out across 8 battles for each hero. The 10 installments are set to be released in the next 12 months, and they will all be playable for free

The Hearthstone Book of Heroes’ first installment will focus on everyone’s first Hearthstone hero, Jaina Proudmoore. It’s only fitting that the first character we ever get to use in Hearthstone’s tutorial mode gets the Book of Heroes treatment first, and fans of Warcraft lore are in for a treat as they’ll get to revisit Jaina’s journey to becoming one of the most powerful mages of Azeroth, through Hearthstone.

The return of the Heroic Brawliseum

If you’ve been saving some gold on the side for your Arena runs and future packs, you might want to consider cashing in 1000 gold for a shot at the Heroic Brawliseum, which is a Tavern Brawl that will be returning to Hearthstone from September 23 to 29. If you weren’t around for the past couple of Brawliseums, it’s basically the Arena format of getting either 12 wins or 3 losses with one deck, but this time you get to bring a deck from your own Collection. Of course, the steep price means that there’ll be great rewards awaiting players who can get those high win-counts. Dust, gold, and even golden legendaries are up for grabs if you can prove your strength at the Brawliseum.

As the Forbidden Library opens up throughout the next three weeks, the Scholar Jaina Bundle (which includes the Scholar Jaina Hero skin as well as five Mage Packs) will be available for purchase from September 16 to 22, while the Magic of Dalaran Card back (a seasonal reward card back from 2017) will be available for purchase from September 23 to 30. You can also check out the full notes for the 18.2 patch here.
