The Groups for the League of Legends 2017 World Championship Play-In and Group Stage have been drawn and boy does it look interesting.
With all 24 teams locked in for the League of Legends 2017 World Championship, the next step before they play was of course to draw them into their different groups.
First to be drawn early tonight was the Play-In Stage wherein the teams from Brazil, Latin America North, Latin America South, Japan, Oceania, Turkey, second seed from Southeast Asia, and Commonwealth of Independent States/Russia along with the third seeds from China, North America, Europe, and Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau were put into three pools based on their competitive strength.
Pool 1 consisted of the third seeds from China, North America, Europe, and Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau. Pool 2 consisted of the teams from Turkey, Brazil, CIS/Russia, and the second seed from Southeast Asia. The last pool consisted of the teams from Latin America North, Latin America South, Oceania, and Japan.
These teams will play in a double round robin best-of-one format where they will fight for the top two spots per group. The top two teams per group will then be drawn to a first seed vs second seed match up in Round 2 of the Play-In Stage to fight for a spot at the Group Stage.
These were the results of the Play-In Stage draw:
Group A: Team WE (China), Gambit.CIS (CIS/Russia), Lyon Gaming (Latin America North)
Group B: Cloud9 (North America), Team oNe eSports (Brazil), Dire Wolves (Oceania)
Group C: Fnatic (Europe), Young Generation (Southeast Asia), Kaos Latin Gamers (Latin America South)
Group D: HK Attitude (Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau), 1907 Fenerbahçe (Turkey), Rampage (Japan)
After the Play-In Stage, the Group Stage is the next step as this is where it will be determined which teams will continue to the Knockout Stage. The Group Stage draw comprised of the three teams from South Korea, top two teams from North America, Europe, China and Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau, and lastly the top team from Southeast Asia.
One rule was followed throughout the Group Stage draw and that was that two teams from the same region couldn’t share the same group this had to be assigned to the next possible group. This rule will also be followed for the four teams that will qualify through the Play-In Stage.
The teams in the Group Stage were separated into two pools. The first pool included the top teams from South Korea, Europe, China, and Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau. The rest of the teams were included in the second pool.
The Group Stage will be played in a double round robin best-of-one with the top two teams per group will continue on to the Knockout Stage.
These were the results of the Group Stage draw:
Group A: EDward Gaming (China), SK Telecom T1 (South Korea), ahq e-Sports Club (Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau)
