What was the last James Bond game you played? Was it the friendship-ruining Nintendo 64 classic GoldenEye? The Pierce Brosnan-led Bond games for the PS1 and PS2? There might even be a few of you who’ve played the Daniel Craig 007 games for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Despite the long history of the world’s most famous secret agent appearing in video games, we haven’t seen a James Bond game since the release of 007 Legends in 2012, which is why many gamers have forgotten the excitement and allure of being double-O behind the controller.
While James Bond might have disappeared from video games in the past years, there have been many games to scratch that shooter-slash-stealth gameplay itch in his absence and the best of them is the Hitman series. IO Interactive’s hit franchise got its second wind with the release of the series’ soft reboot Hitman (2016) and its sequel, Hitman 2 (2018). With the trilogy’s finale, Hitman 3 in development and slated for a 2021 release, fans of the series are starting to wonder what might be next for IO Interactive once Agent 47’s story comes to a close. As you might have guessed, they’ve got another game about a numbered agent in the works, and it’s a match made in heaven.
With the stellar current-gen Hitman games under their belt, IO Interactive is perhaps the only major game studio we can trust to do justice to a 007 game. The recent Hitman games are characterized by their sleek user interfaces, elaborate environments, and thrilling stealth and shooter gameplay, all of which would be perfect for a game with Bond as the protagonist.
The game, which is tentatively titled “Project 007”, is in its early development stages at the time of its announcement just a few days ago. While it’s unlikely that we’ll be hearing more about it soon, it’s bound to resurface on our radar once Hitman 3 hits the shelves and calls the curtains on Agent 47 next year.
