Top 5 Video Game Releases of October 2018

The final quarter of the year is upon us and that also means the biggest season for video game releases has begun. Many big ticket video games come out during the last three months of the year, just in time for the holiday season, and while there are already a ton of great games coming out this month, we’ve rounded up five of the biggest that we think you should definitely check out.

Forza Horizon 4

Forza Motorsport is to the Xbox platform as Gran Turismo is to the PlayStation. And Forza Horizon 4, the fourth entry in the former’s spin-off series, is finally coming out this month. The Forza Horizon series has been able to make a name for itself apart from the original series, with its open-world mechanics and story revolving around the “Horizon Festival.”

Forza Horizon 4 features over 450 licensed automobiles, synchronized shared worlds that support up to 72 players per server, dynamic weather and seasons, a route creator to make your own races, and more. Players will also be able to buy properties across the game’s map to unlock even more content such as items and perks.

Forza Horizon 4 is scheduled for release exclusively on the Xbox One on October 2, 2018.

Mega Man 11

Mega Man 11 (also known as Rock Man 11 in Japan) is the latest entry in the classic Mega Man series of games. It is being released eight years after its predecessor, Mega Man 10, in 2010 to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary. While Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 featured 8-bit graphics and sound, Mega Man 11 uses a 2.5D graphic style.

As with many of the previous main entries in the series, Mega Man 11 has players control the game’s titular character to fight against eight bosses or Robot Masters in eight different stages before going against Dr. Wily himself, one of the series’ main antagonist. The eight Robot Masters include Block Man, Fuse Man, Blast Man, Acid Man, Tundra Man, Torch Man, Impact Man, and Bounce Man.

Mega Man is equipped with his signature Mega Buster and slide  and gain even more weapons as he defeats each of the Robot Masters. Mega Man 11 also adds the Double Gear System that gives Mega Man the Speed Gear and Power Gear abilities that can slow down time or power up his weapons, respectively.

Mega Man 11 comes out on October 2, 2018, for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Last year’s Assassin’s Creed Origins felt like a revival for the series, with its new open-world style, reworked combat mechanics, and the addition of more role-playing elements. With this year’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Ubisoft has decided to double down on the things that made Origins so successful.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is set in Ancient Greece and lets players choose either a male or female character. It features more role-playing elements such as dialogue options, branching quests, and multiple endings. It also features skills trees, special abilities, and a gear system. Lastly, Odyssey brings back naval combat into the series.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is set for release on October 5, 2018, for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is the fifth installment in the Black Ops series under the Call of Duty franchise. While the franchise has been known for creating exciting single-player campaigns, Black Ops 4 is the first entry in the franchise to completely forego it in exchange for a dedicated multiplayer mode.

Black Ops 4 will primarily focus on its multiplayer mode but will feature a Solo Missions mode that focuses on the game’s roster of multiplayer characters.  At launch, there will be ten Specialists available including Ruin, Prophet, Battery, Seraph, Nomad, and Firebreak, who return from Black Ops 3, as well as Recon, Ajax, Torque, Crash, who are new characters to the series.

Apart from its single-player campaign, Black Ops 4 will also be the first in the series to get rid of automatic health regeneration. Players will now have health bars and can heal manually through different means. Other additions to the Black Ops 4 include new predictive recoil and ballistics systems and a battle royale mode called Blackout.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be available starting October 12, 2018, for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Probably one of the most anticipated games this year, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the long-awaited sequel to 2010’s Red Dead Redemption. The new title is a prequel set a few years before the start of the previous game where players take on the role of Arthur Morgan, a prominent member of the Van der Linde gang.

Red Dead Redemption 2 introduces several new mechanics to the series, including new ways to interact with NPCs, different ways to handle situations, a new hunting mode, a first-person mode, and more. The combat and weapon system have also been changed alongside improved horse/mount mechanics.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is scheduled for release on October 26, 2018, on the PS4 and Xbox One.
