7 Awesome Online Games You Can Play With Your Friends Through the Quarantine
Posted by Raphael Leynes March 31, 2020

Depending on where you are in the world, in an effort to combat COVID-19, you’re probably observing social distancing and community quarantine right now. It’s a necessary precaution—one that goes a long way to stop the spread of the infection—but unfortunately, it’s also one that’s put a damper on most of our social plans and gatherings. We all miss being in the same place and hanging out with friends but luckily, thanks through these immersive and fun online games, you can do so from the comfort of your own home.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Platform: Nintendo Switch

If you and your friends have the Nintendo Switch, then with the newly-released Animal Crossing: New Horizons is one of the best ways to hang out and socialize on the system. You play a cute and cuddly custom character as you explore, customize and develop your very own unique deserted island into your own little community of anthropomorphized animals. Best of all, You and up to 8 of your friends can also visit each other’s islands and spend time goofing off and fishing together, as well as playing your own, self-governed minigames!

Jackbox Party Pack

Platforms: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android (selected systems), Apple TV

The Jackbox games are a perennial party-favorite in offices and households the world over thanks to its assortment of wacky minigames that you can play with your friends using only your phones and just one copy of the game! Choose from over 30+ minigames across 7 party packs like the twisted survival horror trivia game, Trivia Murder Party; the improv comedy game Quiplash; monster dating game, Monster Seeking Monster; or the GG Network Overtime favorite Patently Stupid where you pitch crazy products to solve to inane or absurd problems!

World of Warcraft

Platforms: Macintosh operating systems, Microsoft Windows

What better time to get the guildmates back together than right now? Blizzard’s seminal MMORPG World of Warcraft is just bursting with content like new raids and features that’s just waiting for you and your buds to experience—not to mention that the story has gone to some pretty crazy places. If you or any of your friends are new to WoW and just want to try it out before committing to a subscription, then you can create a limited starter character and get your hangouts in that way, exploring the rich lore and the exciting world of Azeroth together.

Final Fantasy XIV: Online

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Macintosh operating systems, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3

Starting off as a very flawed online game when it was released in 2010, Final Fantasy XIV: Online has since picked itself off rock bottom and evolved to become the perfect way to explore a world with the familiar themes and elements of a Final Fantasy game. Fight new and classic Final Fantasy monsters, experience the epic story or even just hang out at your favorite fishing spot and catch up with your friends!

Best of all Final Fantasy XIV: Online has to option to be free-to-play! However if you opt to go this route, you’ll only be able to play a part of the game’s main mission, be able to level up your character to Level 30; have limited access to the games other classes; as well as other limitations. However, if spending some quality time with your favorite people in a world that’s Final Fantasy adjacent is all you need then then hop on in!

Warframe

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

In Warframe, you play as space ninjas with guns and it’s absolutely FREE! What more do you need? Warframe has always been a game that keeps on getting better. In just the last two years alone, the game has added two sprawling open-world maps, vehicles, and a customizable ship with different areas and sections that you have space battles with ala FTL: Faster Than Light!

Black Desert Mobile

Platforms: Android, iOS

For the mobile gamers out there, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Black Desert Mobile. As the little sister of the original Black Desert Online, this gorgeous, ultra-stylish take on the typical MMORPG fare is an amazing experience to play on your mobile phone with your friends. It has some of the prettiest visuals on mobile today and it’s more action-oriented combat system makes the usual RPG grind that much more interesting to go through.

Additionally, the original Black Desert made a name for itself through its incredibly robust character creation system featuring a ton of sculptable face and body features, clothing options and other customization points. Black Desert Mobile has a version of the same system with a mind-blowing amount of customizability!

Sea of Thieves

Platforms: Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

If sea-faring, swashbuckling adventure is more your, try hopping on Sea of Thieves with your best mates! In Sea of Thieves you play a plucky pirate in search for adventure and riches on the open sea. You and your pirate crew can also sail around on your own pirate ship, with each player having their own roles to play in exploration and combat as you fight sea monsters, skeleton galleons and other pirates on your quest to become the ultimate pirate legends.
