Catch Up With The Kingdom Hearts Timeline For KH III Re Mind DLC
Posted by Donna Almonte March 05, 2020

Di ko gets yung story ng KH3. Ano ba dapat ko unahin? Binili ko yung 1.5 Remix.” my friend let out a deep sigh.

Same. I played almost all kaya kilala ko yung characters. Pero nakakalito pa rin,” I replied with a laugh.

As an avid fan of Tetsuya Nomura’s Kingdom Hearts series, I’ll admit that both the timeline and story are very confusing. There’s a lot going on—memories get erased along with characters, hearts get stolen, and there’s an eternal war between light and darkness. Add Disney, Pixar, and Square Enix characters into the mix. Teka lang, ‘di pa tayo tapos.

Sprinkle in some original characters who have Nobodies—heartless individuals who are copies of the original person with an X added to their name (examples: Sora and Roxas, members of the Organization XIII). It gets a lot more confusing when you factor in two KH characters who straight-up look exactly like each other without explanation, each a protagonist of their own KH game (Ventus and Roxas).

Nandito ka pa ba? Another issue: The series loves to go back and forth between Sora’s (the main character) past and present, releasing each game on various platforms and adding prequels, sequels, and remakes whenever they like. Maybe I should split the periods between BC Sora and AD Sora.

With the help of Mark Kriska and the fandom, here’s the chronological order if you want to “dive deep into the heart” (LOL!) of KH. I don’t actually recommend playing it in this order, this just serves as an overview of the events. I’m also adding my personal recommendation of which one to play before trying out Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind DLC.

The Kingdom Hearts Timeline

1. Kingdom Hearts χ Backcover

Meet Ira, one of the five foretellers. (Image via IGDB)

Set in “the age of fairytales”, Kingdom Hearts χ Backcover is actually a feature-length CGI film depicting the events before and during the Keyblade War. The Master of Masters instructs 6 disciples, who protect the world’s light, to form Unions made up of Keyblade wielders. Sa tingin ko pwede mo i-skip if di ka pa super familiar sa buong Kingdom Hearts. Extra content siya for the fans.

2. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (RECOMMENDED)

The WayFinder Trio: Terra, Ventus, Aqua (Image via IGDB)

A personal favorite. Now, this is where the story really starts. Nicknamed the Wayfinder Trio by fans, Ventus, Aqua, and Terra, set off to battle the Unversed throughout many worlds after the Mark of Mastery exam, each with their own personal mission to defeat the darkness. Warning: masakit yung ending, guys.

  • Console: PSP, PS3, PS4

3. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep 0.2 A Fragment Passage

We’re rooting for you, Aqua! (Image via IGDB)

This game features Aqua after she gets lost in the Realm of Darkness—a purgatory of sorts with infinite enemies spawning—as a consequence. It spans over 10 years (in the dark!) after the events of Birth By Sleep and before Kingdom Hearts III. Sobrang tagal niya na-stuck doon sa Realm of Darkness. Kawawa naman.

4. Kingdom Hearts (RECOMMENDED)

The game that started it all. (Image via IGDB)

Mostly everyone’s first Kingdom Hearts game! This is where we first meet the Destiny Islands trio: Sora, Kairi, and Riku, before they set off on their journeys to save each other from darkness. As Sora enters and helps out every world he unlocks—literally with a giant key weapon—he keeps bumping into multiple versions of the main antagonist, Xehanort. Remember, there’s a form of Xehanort in every KH except KH: Backcover.

  • Collections: Kingdom Hearts (PS2), Kingdom Hearts I.5 (PS3), Kingdom Hearts I.5 + II.5 (PS4), Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far (PS4)

  • Console: PS2, PS3, PS4

5. Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories (RECOMMENDED)

Right after the events of the game above, Sora, Donald, and Goofy wander off into Castle Oblivion. As they proceed deeper into the castle, they lose their memories. But they do gain memories of a blonde witch named Naminé, depicted to be Sora’s childhood friend. Warning: the card battle system can be really annoying and tricky to use.

  • Collections: Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories (PS2), Kingdom Hearts I.5 (PS3), Kingdom Hearts I.5 + II.5 (PS4), Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far (PS4)

  • Console: Nintendo DS originally, for the Remake: PS2, PS3, PS4

6. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (RECOMMENDED)

The Sea Salt Ice Cream Gang feat. Roxas (not Ventus) (Image via IGDB)

One of my favorites, featuring Roxas’ experience as the newest member of the Organization XIII (who all work for Master Xehanort). Roxas, Axel, and Xion are the Sea Salt Ice Cream trio. Let’s start with the title: “358/2” just means a year’s worth of events through Roxas (minus the week that Roxas spends in Twilight Town in KH2 below before Sora takes over).

The “/2” might mean Roxas and Xion, who are both Sora’s replicas, siphoning off his memories while Sora and his friends are at Castle Oblivion—remember Chain of Memories above? Gets na?

  • Collections: Kingdom Hearts I.5 (PS3), Kingdom Hearts I.5 + II.5 (PS4), Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far (PS4)

  • Console: Nintendo DS originally, for the Remake: PS3, PS4

7. Kingdom Hearts II (RECOMMENDED)

The main protagonists of KH2 (Image via IGDB)

The dearly beloved installment, KH2, first gives us a glimpse of life in Twilight Town as an angsty teen called Roxas. Then he disappears and Sora takes over. The only clue Sora has is a note from his journal: “Thank Naminé.” Except Sora recovered his memories and has forgotten all about her.

Note that you fight pesky enemies called Nobodies and Heartless in this game. Determined to save Kairi again, Sora sets off with Donald and Goofy to stop Organization XIII from creating another Kingdom Hearts (the heart of all worlds that’ll allow Nobodies to get their own hearts.) Ang daming hearts sa game, okay.

  • Collections: Kingdom Hearts I.5 (PS3), Kingdom Hearts I.5 + II.5 (PS4), Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far (PS4)

  • Console: PS2, PS3, PS4

8. Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded

Get ready for Data Sora and lots of puzzle-solving (Image via IGDB)

Set after Kingdom Hearts II, Jiminy’s Journal (a simple archive for the games’ events, worlds, characters, enemy types) has been corrupted so King Mickey creates a digital Sora to enter the journal and repair the bugs. In my opinion, okay lang if you skip this one or watch some clips of it.

  • Collections: Kingdom Hearts II.5 (PS3), Kingdom Hearts I.5 + II.5 (PS4), Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far (PS4)

  • Console: PS3, PS4

9. Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance

You’ll be switching a lot between Sora and Riku. Enjoy collecting Spirit pets! (Image via IGDB)

Sora and Riku take on the Mark of Mastery exam to prepare for Master Xehanort’s inevitable return. You take turns playing between Sora and Riku in parallel worlds. In this game, you have cuddly pets called Spirits who help you fight—wait for it—Nightmares. What’s cool is that it’s specially tailored for the Nintendo 3Ds, with a lot of the action commands needing the Stylus pen.

  • Collections: Kingdom Hearts II.8 (PS4), Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far (PS4)

  • Platform: Nintendo 3DS, PS4

10. Kingdom Hearts III (RECOMMENDED)

AKA the big reunion for everyone lost in the previous games (Image via IGDB)

Thanks to the events of Dream Drop Distance, Sora is weaker than ever. But he has a big mission. It is Sora’s duty to save all the people who are hurting, namely the people inside Sora’s heart: Roxas, Xion, Terra, Aqua, and Ventus. Yep, the Wayfinder trio and the Sea Salt Ice Cream trio.

All the trios come together in this game—see the game’s cover design for a quick reference. So all the people Sora needs to save can be saved. Their big mission is to collect 7 Keyblade wielders who will fight against Master Xehanort’s Organization XIII—they’re all back from the dead I guess!

  • Platform: PS4, Xbox One

What is Kingdom Hearts III Re-Mind DLC?

If you finished KH III, you know that Kairi was slain by Master Xehanort inside the Keyblade Graveyard during the final battle. While everyone else gets a happy ending, Sora is dead set on saving Kairi. Sora “time travels” to the moments before the battle begins. Without a body, Sora’s spirit follows the hearts of the seven guardians of light and gains deeper insight about them.

Prepare for boss fights galore, hardcore grinding, and the return of some Final Fantasy VII characters you’ve probably missed since the plainly-titled Kingdom Hearts.

Pagod na ako. Hope you enjoyed this recap of the Kingdom Hearts timeline and let us know what you think of Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind DLC.
