Esports AcadArena Unveils Scholarship Program for College Students
Posted by Yuri Mangahas September 21, 2020

Esports AcadArena is gearing up to drive esports in the academe with a scholarship initiative that rewards college students for their enthusiasm for playing video games.

Launched in partnership with Globe Telecom, the scholarship effort is attached to AcadArena’s Alliance Program, an initiative that provides student organizations with monthly tournament support, exclusive league access, industry support, and other benefits.

AcadArena also offers bootcamps for aspiring esports athletes.

A Scholarship for Esports

The scholarships are available for accredited student organizations and universities under the Alliance Program, such as De La Salle University, Holy Angel University, University of the Philippines – Diliman, and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

The partnership is offering two scholarship options for “three-star” or active members of the Alliance.

Meanwhile, a “Family Good Game” grant will be offered to families of players with good character who qualified in AcadArena’s official tourneys.

AcadArena will reveal more information about the program’s qualifications and application process later in the year.

Esports in a Time of Pandemic

Dennis Christian Dominguez, Head of Games and Esports at Globe, acknowledged the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, with both students and teachers adjusting to the prevalent digital norm.

Many schools are turning to esports to supplement the lack of extracurricular activities,” Dominguez noted.

Online tournaments have also become prevalent in the months that followed after COVID-19 broke out. Mineski’s Youth Esports Program held tourneys in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Marvel Super War, and Call of Duty Mobile to support health frontliners, while international leagues like the Pacific Championship Series resorted to online matches to compensate for travel bans and quarantine regulations.

Mineski held a series of online tourneys in March to support Filipino healthcare workers.

Ariane Lim, Co-Founder and Director of Student Programs at AcadArena, mused the organization explored an approach that will align with the program’s ‘not just play’ concept.

We didn’t want to attach the scholarship to a singular game title. We also wanted to be more relevant to a student’s lifestyle.

Student organizations and campus esports programs interested in participating in the Alliance program may learn more about the scholarship effort and fill out the application here.
