The NBA 2K League, just announced today that the 2020 regular season of the official esports league of the NBA will begin this Wednesday, May 6 Phillippine time. The season will start off with at least six weeks of remote gameplay with all 23 NBA 2K League teams participating from their local markets. The games will be simulcasted live on the NBA 2K League’s official Twitch and YouTube channels.
The games will tip-off at 7 a.m. Philippine time, every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday featuring four unique matchups per evening. In expected six weeks of remote gameplay, things will be a little bit different as each match will be played in a best-of-three format, with each of the teams expected eight matches counting toward its regular-season record. Each three-game-series victory will translate to one regular-season win, and each three-game-series loss will represent one regular-season loss.
This format allows the NBA 2K League broadcast to switch between games that are happening at the same time which gives fans a chance to catch the action from all corners of the League.
The 2020 NBA 2K League start-of-season schedule is as follows (adjusted to Philippine Time):
May 6 – 9 Regular Season – Week 1
May 13 – 16 Regular Season – Week 2
May 20 – 23 Regular Season – Week 3
May 27 – 30 Regular Season – Week 4
June 3 – 6 Regular Season – Week 5
As in previous seasons, the 2020 season will include three in-season tournaments namely: THE TIPOFF, THE TURN, and THE TICKET. In THE TIPOFF and THE TURN tournaments, all 23 teams compete for banners that link together and form THE BANNER CHAIN powered by AT&T which represent seeding in the NBA 2K League Playoffs. In THE TICKET, the 14 teams that do not make it to the top 9 playoff seeds will compete for the 10th and final spot in the 2020 NBA 2K League Playoffs.
Additionally, select NBA 2K League teams will be able to host rivalry matches and round-robin events. The remainder of the 2020 season schedule and structure, including the dates of tournaments, rivalry matches, and round-robin events, will be shared as information becomes available.
The NBA 2K League will be implementing an innovative new production model and presentation style that will best allow fans to catch the action from all corners of the League even through remote broadcasting. The model will include fan-favorite NBA 2K League broadcasters to announce games from the safety of their homes via a virtual NBA 2k League Studio that helps everyone stay on top of the action.
NBA 2K League Managing Director Brendan Donohue had this to say about this unprecedented new season:
“We are thrilled to officially tip off the 2020 NBA 2K League season remotely and hope the excitement of NBA 2K League competition provides both new and returning fans with a fun way to stay connected and engage with our league during these unprecedented times. Our players have been quarantining with their teammates as they prepare for the season and will now have the opportunity to compete against one another and show they are the best players in the world.”
Also a new addition for the 2020 season, the NBA 2K League has launched the campaign entitled, “THIS IS NOT A GAME.” The campaign highlights the rigid training, intense preparation as well as challenges and trials along that way that teams have to endure to emerge as champions in the league—this is more than just a game, its a way of life
