Nintendo Switch Titles to Watch Out For in 2020
Posted by Yuri Mangahas February 12, 2020

2019 has been a great year for the Nintendo Switch and its plethora of games, and the momentum keeps on rolling as we head towards 2020 with a slew of amazing titles for Nintendo’s flagship console.

Darksiders Genesis

Release Date: February 14, 2020

Genre: Action / Hack & Slash

Intended as a prequel to the main Darksiders series, Darksiders Genesis follows the fourth horseman Strife, who is summoned alongside his brother War to save mankind from the hands of the evil Lucifer. The latest title will allow players to take a peek at the Darksiders world before the beginning of the main story and delve further into the origin of the seven seals. You may opt to play through a single-player campaign, or have fun with a friend via a two-player co-op mode. If anything, Genesis looks one hell of a game to play at.

MegaMan Zero/Zx Legacy Collection

Release Date: February 25, 2020

Genre: Action/Side-Scroller

Missed the crimson Maverick hunter and his Z-Saber? Fret not, as Capcom revives the beloved Game Boy Advance classic and its Nintendo DS spin-off sequels in MegaMan Zero/ZX Legacy Collection. The compilation houses all four games from the MegaMan Zero series along with MegaMan ZX and its sequel, ZX Advent. Unlike the original titles, the compendium purports itself as a casual-friendly title and will allow players to revive at their last checkpoints without losing lives through a save-assist option. The title will also feature never-before-seen content, such as original production art and a collection of tunes from the two series.

Samurai Shodown

Release Date: February 25, 2020

Genre: Fighting

The Samurai Shodown franchise finally makes a debut on Nintendo’s flagship console. Cited as a reboot prequel of the cult fighting game classic, the latest game in the series sports a brand-new 3D aesthetic style and will center on various warriors around Japan as they investigate the emergence of dark forces and the revival of Shizuka Gozen. 17 playable characters will be available in the base roster, with additional warriors accessible through downloadable content.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Release Date: March 20, 2020

Genre: Life-Simulation

Get ready to pack your bags for a trip like never before, as Nook Inc. takes us to the vacation of a lifetime with Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Set in a dreamy tropical island, the game will allow players to customize the entire map, from your campsite, down to the surrounding beaches and areas. You can also craft your resources and perform other activities like mining, cooking, and fishing. It also sports a multiplayer option with up to eight players and a realistic weather mechanic, which will let players experience changes in season. Fans of the longstanding franchise will definitely find the game familiar, yet refreshing.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX

Release Date: March 6, 2020

Genre: Adventure/RPG

Spike Chunsoft breathes new life to the beloved Nintendo Classic as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is slated to hit shelves in the summer. Similar to the premise of the 3DS titles Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team, players may opt to play a particular Pokemon through a personality quiz and befriend other Pokemon while taking on various jobs and completing quests. With a storybook-esque design and a streamlined gameplay system, Pokemon fans are in for a treat.

Gods & Monsters

Release Date: Fall 2020

Genre: Action/Adventure

Perhaps one of Ubisoft’s biggest surprises in E3 2019, Gods & Monsters is an entirely new IP developed by the brains behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The team describes the title as a “storybook adventure” inspired by Greek mythology with sandbox elements and lush environs. You will play as an unnamed hero, and you are tasked to venture across the world and save the gods from a deadly monster known as Typhon. Details are still scarce at this point, but if the E3 teaser is any indication, the game may prove to be interesting.

Release Date: TBA 2020

Genre: RPG

Typically, post-apocalyptic games aren’t charming in general, but in the case of Eastward, it’s the first adjective that comes to mind. The game leverages a pixelated art style with a control dynamic similar to classic RPGs. The story centers on a young boy named Seth and a mysterious girl named Sam, as they journey to a decaying world while uncovering the latter’s memories, as well as the source of the monsters who lay havoc to every town.

Cris Tales

Release Date: TBA 2020

Genre: Side-Scroller/RPG

With a distinct cartoonish art style and a clever time travel feature, Modus’ side-scroller RPG Cris Tales easily stands out across a sea of indie titles. Set in a huge fairytale-inspired world, the player will work to unravel the Empress’ complex plot to destroy the world by making important choices in the past, present and future. The team reveals that they took elements from Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI as inspiration and notes that Cris Tales is a love letter to every fan of the JRPG genre.

Pokemon Sword & Shield Expansion Pass

Release Date: June 2020 (The Isle of Armor), November 2020 (Crown Tundra)

Genre: Adventure/RPG

While not an entirely new Pokemon title, Pokemon Sword & Shield’s expansion pass will allow you to enjoy two games for the price of one. The DLC pack will enable players to access new and uncharted areas in the Galar Region. Aside from the expanded map, the DLCs will feature brand new storylines, two upcoming legendaries, and regional forms of pre-existing Pokemon such as Slowpoke, Zapdos, Articuno and Moltres. The expansion pass’s first half will also help players achieve Gigantamax forms for Cinderace, Inteleon, and Rillaboom. Pokemon Sword and Shield just might be the best core titles in the series yet.

Genshin Impact

Release Date: Spring 2020

Genre: Adventure/RPG

Developed by the team behind the well-known hack-and-slash mobile game Honkai Impact 3rd, Genshin Impact is an open-world RPG set in the world of Teyvat, a vast realm inhabited by humans, monsters and various creatures. The player takes on the role of an unnamed traveler, as he/she ventures into Teyvat while meeting other adventurers and discovering the truth behind the deities of their world. Aside from the default character, players will be allowed to unlock 30 other playable characters while accomplishing a plethora of quests and exploring the game’s open-world map.
