The Games Up for Grabs on PS Plus and Xbox Games with Gold for February 2021
Posted by Paolo Arciga February 01, 2021

Alongside the recent launches of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S, their respective subscription services began to slowly ease into having next-gen offerings in their monthly free game line-ups. PS Plus had the PS5 enhanced version of Maneater in their January 2021 line-up, while Microsoft focused on improving Xbox Game Pass services by making new, next-gen releases (the most recent one being The Medium) playable on day one through the subscription.

It’s clear from the get-go that these platforms are taking different directions with their plans for subscription services, and we’re bound to see PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass, and Xbox Games with Gold evolve as the rollout continues for next-gen consoles. For February 2021, PS Plus will be making three games available for free, while Games with Gold will do them two better with five games.

Here are the free games up for grabs on PS Plus and Xbox Games with Gold for February 2021.

PS Plus Free Games for February 2021

Destruction AllStars (PS5)

Twisted Metal meets Rocket League in this modern take on the vehicular combat game. Destruction AllStars is one of the new titles coming to the PlayStation 5 during the console’s launch window, and it’ll be available to download for free for PS Plus subscribers once it’s released on February 2.

Destruction AllStars features several modes that’ll test your maneuvering and combat skills both inside and outside your vehicle. It’s a hero-based game that mixes platforming with vehicle combat, granting you special abilities specific to your hero and their unique vehicle. If you’ve been itching for a Twisted Metal remake, this is a game you should be excited for. If you won’t be able to snag a PS5 just yet this February, don’t worry because it’ll be available for free download until April 5.

Control: Ultimate Edition (PS5/PS4)

Also launching for the PS5 on February 2 is the enhanced, Ultimate Edition of the 2019 double-A hit, Control. Remedy Entertainment and publisher 505 Games became the subject of scrutiny last year after they announced that Control: Ultimate Edition would only be available for next-gen upgrades for those who’ve purchased the same version of the game on PS4 or Xbox One. This means that those who owned the base game would not be eligible for the next-gen upgrade.

Perhaps as a way of making it up to their fans, Remedy and 505 Games have put up both the PS4 and PS5 versions of Control: Ultimate Edition for free on PS Plus. The Ultimate Edition comes with two DLC expansions released for the game last year: The Foundation, and AWE, the latter of which is a crossover expansion with the Alan Wake series.

Concrete Genie (PS4)

Last but not the least on February’s PS Plus line-up is Concrete Genie, which is a short but sweet, semi-open world game where you can literally go and paint the town. In Concrete Genie, you take control of a young boy named Ash who comes into possession of a magic paintbrush that can bring your doodles to life.

Your main objective is to retrieve all the pages of your doodle notebook that were scattered by the town’s bullies, and you can only unlock certain areas of the map by lighting up key areas with your living paintings. Concrete Genie is a brief and poignant coming-of-age story told through a paintbrush mechanic reminiscent of Okami. At the low, low price of zero dollars, it’s definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re looking for a family-friendly that your kids or younger siblings might enjoy.

Xbox Games with Gold Free Games for February 2021

Microsoft recently went under fire when they announced that they’d be hiking up the prices for Xbox Games with Gold subscription plans and eliminating the most cost-effective 12-month plan. The backlash was so immense that they took back their plans for price changes the next day. It was a good move on their part to immediately address the issue, but the original announcement removing 12-month subscriptions might have been an indicator that the Xbox platform is leaning more and more towards the Game Pass rather than Games with Gold.

With Game Pass having more next-gen offerings than Games with Gold, you might be inclined to subscribe to the former instead, but February’s Games with Gold line-up is surprisingly decent. Subscribers will be getting three current-gen games (Gears 5, Resident Evil HD, and Dandara: Trials of Fear Edition) as well as two classic previous-gen titles (Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb, and Lost Planet 2).

If you’re interested in making the most of your Xbox subscription plan, why not get the Game Pass Ultimate? It comes with Games with Gold as well as Game Pass for PC.
