5 Great Netflix Shows That Won’t Waste Your Time
Posted by Raphael Leynes September 26, 2019

Browsing through your Netflix queue and having trouble deciding what to watch? We’ve all been there. In the cornucopia of content that is Netflix it gets easy to lose yourself to decision paralysis. We get it. You wouldn’t want to waste 20 minutes to an hour of your life on a terrible show, when you could have been watching something else.  Well, fret no more dear reader, we’ve compiled a quick list of Netflix shows that are worth you oh-so-precious time!

GLOW

Official Synopsis:

“In 1980s LA, a crew of misfits reinvent themselves as the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.”

Despite being far from a full on documentary, Netflix’s GLOW is just about the most entertaining way to present the struggles of the famous women-centric professional wrestling promotion in the late 80’s. In between the vicious body slams and the training montages, the show manages to pipe in a generous helping of drama and comedy while tackling some modern issues about empowerment, representation and equality. If you like your wrestling with a slight dose of social responsibility, we suggest you give GLOW a shot.

Final Table

Official Synopsis:

“In this fast-paced competition, teams of chefs vie to impress some of the toughest palates as they whip up iconic dishes from around the world.”

What might seem like just another cooking show in Final Table is actually anything but. The bombastic presentation style, the narrative drama and the stakes on the line-a seat at the table comprised of the world’s finest culinary masters- all combine to an engrossing and thrilling look into the world of masterclass culinary competitions. Final Table is a show about how the best of the best become the greatest ever and you owe it to yourself to watch their journey.

Umbrella Academy

Official Synopsis:

“Seven are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world.”

The Umbrella Academy is the live-action adaptation of the cult-classic comic book written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Ba. This dark and quirky adaptation loses a lot of the comics nonchalant absurdity but makes up for it with some much-needed exposition and exploration of the main characters and their relationships. The finished product is much more holistic in its treatment of the story, setting things up properly to a well-deserved emotional pay off and even giving side characters a lot more to do. This results in a better story when all things are considered. If you’ve never read The Umbrella Academy, this series is a good place to start.

Dark

Official Synopsis:

“A missing child sets four families on a frantic hunt for answers as they unearth a mind-bending mystery that spans three generations.”

This next recommendation comes with a warning: Dark is a show that doesn’t pull its punches. The german sci-fi drama will throw a lot of things at you at any given time: time travel, quantum physics, temporal causality, polluted time streams, mysterious disappearances, entire family lineages, nuclear sensationalism, german history, post-apocalyptic futures and, at the end of the most recent season, alternate dimensions! We will promise you this though, if you do manage to stick around, the wild and crazy ride is worth it.

Marvel’s Daredevil

Official Synopsis:

“Blinded as a young boy, Matt Murdock fights injustice by day as a lawyer and by night as the Super Hero Daredevil in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.”

Marvel’s Daredevil has been one of the original bastions of Netflix that contributed to its meteoric rise to fame so many years ago. This is impressive given the quality of all other superhero-centric shows that were around at the time. Marvel’s Daredevil gave us what is easily the best incarnation of a superhero on TV through its grounded realism, engrossing writing, gritty action and brilliant performances by its cast. In today’s post Avengers: Endgame world, Daredevil still holds up as a superhero show and is definitely worth investing the time to catch up on.
