Hungrybox Quits Job to Focus on Smash Melee Full-Time
Posted by cmsadminGG October 16, 2016

One of competitive Smash Bros. Melee’s best players and one of the Five Gods, Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma of Team Liquid, has announced through his Twitch stream that he has quit his engineering job at WestRock, a corrugated packaging company, to pursue competitive Smash Bros. Melee full-time. He joins a fast-growing list of players who have made Smash their primary profession either through competitive play or through streaming, both of which Hungrybox plans to pursue.

His decision to go pursue gaming full-time seems to have stemmed from his recent performance at the Smash major The Big House 6 in Michigan where he placed 5th after losing to Counter-logic Gaming’s Zachary “SFAT” Cordoni which triggered what he says was a mental breakdown, prompting him to decide to make some “major adjustments” to his life which looks to include leaving his job at WestRock.

He had already mentioned in a previous interview with Vice that most recently his job at WestRock, which included being relocated to Demopolis, Alabama, has made practicing and competing in Smash more difficult and if he placed lower than third at The Big House 6, he would consider a career change.

But Hungrybox won’t just be focusing on Melee and streaming full-time as he has also mentioned that he plans to study computer programming and science in the hopes of pursuing a career in app development or work somewhere in the video game industry such as Twitch.

Aside from his 5th place finish at The Big House 6, Hungrybox’s performance this year has been incredibly impressive with first place finishes at EVO 2016, CEO 2016, and at this year’s Battle of the Five Gods. And with this latest move, we might even see more improvement from the 2nd ranked Melee player in the world.
